Samsung Overtakes Apple in India’s Super-Premium Smartphone Segment, But iPhone 16 Remains Best-Seller: IDC Report
India’s smartphone market in the first half of 2025 has witnessed a major shake-up. For the first time ever, Samsung has edged past Apple in the super-premium segment—smartphones priced above $800 (around ₹70,000)—according to the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) report.
India’s Smartphone Market: Steady Growth Despite Challenges
IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker revealed that India shipped around 70 million smartphones in the first half of 2025, registering a modest 0.9% year-over-year growth. The second quarter was more promising, with 37 million units shipped, marking a healthy 7.3% YoY increase.
This growth was fueled by strong demand in the high-end market, with the super-premium segment growing by 15.8% and maintaining a 7% share of the overall market.
Samsung Takes the Lead Over Apple
Samsung claimed the top spot in the ultra-premium category with a 49% market share, narrowly beating Apple’s 48%. This shift marks a historic milestone for Samsung in India’s luxury smartphone market.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra, Galaxy S25, and Galaxy S24 Ultra were the driving force behind Samsung’s success, offering cutting-edge AI features, enhanced performance, and premium design.
Apple Still Has the Most Popular Single Model
While Samsung leads in total super-premium shipments, Apple’s iPhone 16 remains India’s single best-selling smartphone in the first half of 2025. The iPhone 16 alone accounted for 4% of all smartphone shipments in the country, with the iPhone 16 Plus also contributing strongly to Apple’s overall position.
This split highlights a fascinating dynamic—Samsung’s broader flagship portfolio is attracting more buyers collectively, but Apple continues to dominate in individual model popularity.
A Competitive and Balanced High-End Market
Industry experts note that India’s high-end smartphone market is now more competitive than ever. With both brands showcasing flagship innovations, AI advancements, and premium build quality, consumers have more reasons than ever to consider upgrading to the top-tier segment.
Samsung’s first-time lead in the category signals shifting consumer preferences, while Apple’s continued dominance with the iPhone 16 proves its strong brand loyalty.
